American Hartford Gold is a precious-metals dealer, not a substitute for an independent financial adviser. Its service brings together the metal purchase, a self-directed IRA custodian and a storage facility. The appeal is a guided process and an explicit $10,000 minimum IRA order. The limitation is that the public pages we checked do not establish one complete fee schedule for every account. Our assessment is based on published documents, not a purchase, test account or interview with the company.

Minimum investment and what you can buy
AHG's official FAQ states a $10,000 minimum order for its self-directed Gold IRA. This is a dealer minimum, not an IRS contribution limit. Someone rolling over an existing retirement balance should still confirm the minimum applicable to their order and promotion.
Its retirement-account pages focus on gold and silver. The company also markets platinum on its About page; ask which products are currently available and eligible for your IRA. A collectible coin or premium product is not automatically eligible simply because a dealer sells it. Direct cash purchases are separate from IRA purchases and custody requirements.
Fees: why we do not publish a single annual total
| Cost | Published guidance |
|---|---|
| Account setup | Confirm in writing |
| Annual custodian | Account-specific quote |
| Storage and insurance | Account-specific quote |
| Dealer premium / spread | Product-specific quote |
Fixed fees exclude dealer premiums and additional transactions. Confirm the fee agreement for your chosen custodian and depository.
The official IRA page says setup fees may apply and costs depend on the custodian and depository. The FAQ says storage charges vary and may be waived in some circumstances. That does not establish a universal zero setup fee or a standard $180 all-in annual cost.
Request an itemized quote for setup, annual custodian administration, storage, insurance, wires, distributions and account closure. Separately ask for the price of each coin or bar, its premium over spot and a same-day indicative buyback quote. A modest annual fee does not necessarily make the metal purchase inexpensive: the buy/sell spread can be more consequential.
Until AHG confirms your account's terms, our cost assessment is quote required. Promotional waivers should be shown separately from ordinary recurring charges.
Custodian and storage arrangements
AHG's IRA page names Equity Trust and discusses Entrust. Its FAQ identifies Brink's Global Services and Delaware Depository as storage options. Before funding an account, obtain the exact custodian name, fee agreement, chosen facility, insurance provisions and whether the storage is segregated or non-segregated.
IRA metals are not the same as coins bought for home delivery. IRS guidance explains the exceptions for qualifying coins and bullion and says qualifying bullion must be physically held by a bank or approved non-bank trustee. Do not interpret dealer marketing as government endorsement or permission to keep IRA bullion at home.
Buyback: no additional liquidation fee is not a guarantee
On its About page, AHG says it encourages customers to contact it when selling, charges no additional liquidation fees, and cannot legally guarantee repurchase. We would therefore not describe this as a guaranteed exit or guaranteed market-value buyback.
Ask how the bid is set, how long the quote remains valid and when proceeds reach your custodian. The dealer's no-additional-fee policy does not guarantee recovery of your original premium or eliminate custodian transaction and closing charges. If metals are sold inside the IRA, distinguish that sale from withdrawing money from the account.
Silver bonuses and fee waivers
The campaign page checked for this review advertises up to $20,000 in silver, free account setup and up to five years of storage on qualifying purchases. These are conditional, limited-time marketing offers, not the ordinary terms of every $10,000 IRA.
We did not establish a complete public purchase-tier schedule for that campaign. Get the qualifying amount, eligible products, bonus valuation, covered fees, expiry and cancellation conditions in writing. Free storage does not necessarily cover annual custodian maintenance. Compare the net purchase price and exit spread with and without the promotion rather than choosing on the headline bonus alone.
How to open an account
Request written terms
Confirm the IRA minimum, all account fees and any promotion conditions.
Choose custody and storage
Identify the custodian, depository, storage type and insurance before transferring funds.
Compare the metal order
Ask for prices, dealer premiums and indicative buyback bids on the exact products.
Fund and retain records
Have the custodian or a tax professional confirm the transfer; keep your agreements and trade confirmations.
Ask a qualified tax professional about your particular rollover. Eligibility, withholding and deadlines can differ; a sales representative's description is not personal tax advice.
Pros and cons
What we like
- Explicit $10,000 IRA order minimum
- Guided IRA setup with named custody and storage options
- Public disclosure that repurchase is not guaranteed
- Potential fee waivers for qualifying accounts
Watch out for
- No complete universally applicable fee schedule established from the reviewed pages
- Promotional eligibility and dealer spreads need written confirmation
- Buyback does not guarantee a sale price or recovery of premiums
- No firsthand service test performed for this review
Our verdict
AHG is worth including in a written-quote comparison if you meet its IRA minimum and prefer a guided process. We would not select it solely because of a free-silver offer or a claim of low fees. The decision should turn on the complete custodian and storage costs, the prices of your chosen metals, and documented resale terms.

What is American Hartford Gold's IRA minimum?
Its official FAQ states a $10,000 minimum order for a self-directed Gold IRA. Confirm the current requirement and any separate promotion thresholds before funding.
Does American Hartford Gold charge no fees?
Not universally. Setup may apply and custody/storage costs depend on the account. Conditional campaign waivers are not a complete standard fee schedule; request an itemized quote.
Is American Hartford Gold's buyback guaranteed?
No. Its About page expressly says repurchase cannot be legally guaranteed. The stated lack of additional liquidation fees does not guarantee a price or remove all custodian charges.
Can I store IRA gold at home?
Do not treat cash-purchase home delivery as IRA custody. IRS guidance requires qualifying bullion to be physically held by a bank or approved non-bank trustee; confirm the account's arrangements with the custodian.
