The best gold IRA companies of 2026, compared honestly
We compare the leading precious metals IRA providers on the things that actually affect your retirement: total fees, account minimums, storage, buyback terms and how they treat customers — so you can choose with confidence, not pressure.
Gold has held its purchasing power over long periods, which is why many savers turn to it when prices are rising and cash is losing value.
Real diversification
Physical metals often move differently from stocks and bonds, which can soften the blow when markets fall.
A tangible asset
You own actual coins and bars, held in insured vaults in your name — not a promise on a screen.
The other side: gold pays no interest or dividends, its price can fall sharply, and a gold IRA costs more to run than an ordinary IRA. Most planners treat it as a portion of a portfolio, not the whole thing.

How a gold IRA works, in four steps
Open a self-directed IRA
Your chosen company helps you open a self-directed IRA with an approved custodian — the only type of IRA that can hold physical metals.
Fund the account
Transfer or roll over money from an existing IRA, 401(k), 403(b) or TSP. Done as a direct transfer, it's normally tax- and penalty-free.
Choose your metals
Pick IRS-approved gold, silver, platinum or palladium coins and bars. Ask for the price per ounce and the dealer spread in writing.
Secure storage
Your metals go to an insured, IRS-approved depository. You get statements, and most companies offer a buyback when you want to sell.

Augusta Precious Metals
Education-first service and lifetime account support for larger rollovers.
Augusta Precious Metals has built its name on one idea: investors should understand what they are buying before they buy it. Founded in 2012, the company deals only in gold and silver, and every new client is offered a one-on-one education session before any paperwork is discussed.
That focus shows up throughout the process. Augusta assigns a dedicated customer success agent who stays with the account for its lifetime, handles the rollover paperwork with your existing custodian, and remains the point of contact when you want to add to or sell your holdings later.
What they offer
Gold and silver IRAs, including 401(k), 403(b), TSP and IRA rollovers
Direct (non-IRA) purchases of physical gold and silver delivered to your home
IRA-eligible bullion coins and bars that meet IRS purity standards
Premium and collectible coins for investors who want them
Why it stands out
Lifetime account support. The same small team handles your account for as long as you hold it, not just during setup.
Serious investor education. A free one-on-one web conference with Augusta's Harvard-trained economist Devlyn Steele, plus a video library and a dedicated section on spotting gold IRA scams.
Clear, published fees. Setup, custodian and storage costs are listed up front, and shipping and insurance are included on qualifying orders.
Strong public ratings. A+ with the Better Business Bureau and AAA with the Business Consumer Alliance.
What we like
Education comes before any sales conversation
Real-time gold and silver pricing charts on the website
Free web conference on inflation and economic risk
White-glove handling of setup, paperwork and rollovers
Published consumer guide to avoiding gold IRA fraud
Watch out for
$50,000 minimum puts it out of reach for smaller savers
Gold and silver only — no platinum or palladium
Fees
Year one costs roughly $275 ($50 setup + $125 custodian + $100 storage), then about $225 a year after that. The main variable cost is the dealer spread on the metals you buy, so ask for it in writing before you commit.
Storage
Metals are held in segregated, insured storage at IRS-approved depositories. Options have included Delaware Depository (Wilmington), plus facilities in Los Angeles, Salt Lake City, Jackson (Ohio), Springfield Gardens (New York) and Mississauga, Ontario for eligible international clients.
Best for: Investors rolling over $50,000 or more who want to be walked through the decision properly and value having one long-term contact.
Goldco is one of the best-known names in precious metals IRAs. Headquartered in the Los Angeles area and operating since 2006, it has helped thousands of savers move part of their retirement money into physical gold and silver.
It suits first-time investors well: there is no published account minimum, the setup process is handled end to end by a specialist, and eligible accounts can receive bonus silver on qualifying purchases. The trade-off is that pricing and storage details are only shared once you speak with the team.
What they offer
Gold and silver IRAs, with rollovers from 401(k), 403(b), TSP and existing IRAs
Gold and silver coins and bars for direct purchase
A buyback program for selling metals back to Goldco
A free precious metals starter guide
Why it stands out
Buyback program. Goldco will buy back metals it sold you, which gives your holdings a straightforward exit route.
Bonus silver. Qualifying accounts may receive up to 10% in bonus silver on eligible purchases.
Responsive support. Phone, email and live chat, with a named specialist guiding the setup.
Beginner-friendly education. A free starter kit and clear, jargon-free content on the website.
What we like
No stated minimum to open an account
Wide range of IRA-approved coins and bars
One of the strongest buyback programs in the industry
Large volume of positive customer reviews
Up-to-date market news and educational content
Watch out for
Fees, custodians and storage partners are not published on the website
Bonus offers come with conditions — read the terms carefully
Fees
Goldco does not publish a fee schedule. Its costs are broadly in line with industry norms, but you will need to ask for a written breakdown of setup, custodian, storage and dealer spreads before you fund an account.
Storage
Metals are shipped to insured, IRS-approved depositories. Goldco does not name its storage partners publicly, so ask which facility will hold your metals and whether storage is segregated.
Best for: First-time gold IRA investors and anyone starting with a smaller balance who wants a guided, hands-on setup.

Metal premiums and additional transactions are separate. Sources checked October 3, 2026.
American Hartford Gold is a precious-metals dealer, not a substitute for an independent financial adviser. Its service brings together the metal purchase, a self-directed IRA custodian and a storage facility. The appeal is a guided process and an explicit $10,000 minimum IRA order. The limitation is that the public pages we checked do not establish one complete fee schedule for every account. Our assessment is based on published documents, not a purchase, test account or interview with the company.
What we like
Explicit $10,000 IRA order minimum
Guided IRA setup with named custody and storage options
Public disclosure that repurchase is not guaranteed
Potential fee waivers for qualifying accounts
Watch out for
No complete universally applicable fee schedule established from the reviewed pages
Promotional eligibility and dealer spreads need written confirmation
Buyback does not guarantee a sale price or recovery of premiums
No firsthand service test performed for this review
Best for: Investors who meet the $10,000 IRA order minimum and want help arranging a rollover, while comparing written quotes before committing.

Birch Gold Group's strongest practical advantage is that its own website gives readers a usable starting point for comparing IRA costs. Its current published minimum is $5,000, not the older $10,000 figure still repeated in some comparisons. The company estimates about $235 in recurring annual custodian and storage charges for most customers. Those fixed charges are only part of the cost: metal premiums, transactions and the eventual resale spread still matter. This review evaluates public disclosures, not firsthand customer service or an account we opened.

Noble Gold markets precious-metals IRAs alongside direct purchases. Its official Gold IRA page sets a $20,000 IRA minimum, and its support information describes segregated storage through International Depository Services. The most important finding in this review is a transparency issue: two live official pages publish different fee schedules. We present both instead of choosing the cheaper figure or describing storage alone as the full annual cost. This is a document-based review, not a firsthand purchase or service test.
What we like
Explicit $20,000 IRA minimum on the product page
Itemized account charges published, although inconsistent across pages
Segregated storage described in the support FAQ
Company markets a repurchase program for its own customers
Watch out for
Product and support pages disagree on annual storage and total fees
Metal premiums and potential exit charges are additional
Buyback marketing does not establish a guaranteed price
Bonus qualifications require further written confirmation
Best for: Investors meeting the $20,000 IRA minimum who want segregated storage and will obtain a complete written fee agreement before funding.
We add up setup, custodian, storage and insurance fees, and look at whether the company publishes them. Hidden or hard-to-find pricing counts against a provider.
Reputation
We check Better Business Bureau and Business Consumer Alliance ratings, Trustpilot scores, complaint history and any regulatory actions.
Customer experience
We look at minimums, education, how pushy the sales process is, buyback terms and the storage options on offer.
Before you sign anything: 5 questions to ask
What is the spread on this exact product? The difference between what you pay and what they'll buy it back for is often the biggest cost.
What are all the annual fees, in writing? Custodian, storage, insurance and any maintenance fees.
Is storage segregated or commingled? Segregated means your specific coins and bars are kept separate.
What are the buyback terms? Ask how the buyback price is set and how quickly you're paid.
Are these coins IRS-approved bullion? Be wary of being steered into high-premium collectible coins.
Gold IRA questions, answered
What is a gold IRA?
A gold IRA is a self-directed individual retirement account that holds physical, IRS-approved precious metals — gold, silver, platinum or palladium — instead of (or alongside) stocks, bonds and funds. It follows the same contribution, tax and withdrawal rules as a traditional or Roth IRA; the difference is what the account owns.
Is investing in gold safe?
Gold has a long history as a store of value and often holds up when stocks or the dollar are under pressure, which is why many people use it to diversify. But it is not risk-free: its price can fall, it pays no interest or dividends, and gold IRAs carry storage and dealer costs that paper investments don't. Most financial planners suggest keeping precious metals to a modest share of a retirement portfolio.
Can I roll over my 401(k) or IRA into a gold IRA?
Yes. Funds from a 401(k), 403(b), 457, TSP or existing IRA can usually be moved into a gold IRA without taxes or penalties, provided it is done as a direct custodian-to-custodian transfer or a properly completed rollover. If you take the money yourself, you generally have 60 days to deposit it, and you're limited to one indirect IRA rollover in any 12-month period.
What fees should I expect?
Typical costs include a one-time setup fee, an annual custodian or maintenance fee, annual storage and insurance, and the dealer's markup (spread) on the metals themselves. Annual fees commonly run $150–$300, but the spread on coins can matter far more. Always ask for a written, itemized quote before funding your account.
Where is my gold stored?
Metals in a gold IRA must be held by an IRS-approved depository, such as Delaware Depository, Brink's or International Depository Services. They are insured and audited, and many offer segregated storage so your exact coins and bars are kept separate. You can't legally store IRA gold at home — so-called “home storage IRAs” risk the account being treated as distributed and taxed.
Which metals can go into a gold IRA?
Only metals that meet IRS fineness standards: 99.5% for gold, 99.9% for silver and 99.95% for platinum and palladium. American Gold Eagles are a notable exception allowed by law. Most collectible and rare coins do not qualify.
When can I access or sell my gold?
You can sell metals inside the IRA at any time, with the proceeds staying in the account. Withdrawals before age 59½ usually carry a 10% penalty plus income tax (for traditional IRAs). From the age required by current rules, traditional gold IRAs are subject to required minimum distributions, which you can take in cash or by having the metal shipped to you.
How much should I put into a gold IRA?
That depends on your age, goals and the rest of your portfolio. Many advisors suggest precious metals make up a single-digit to low-double-digit percentage of retirement savings rather than the majority. If you're unsure, speak with a licensed, fee-only financial adviser before moving a large sum.
About Gold IRA Companies
We believe retirement decisions deserve clear information, not sales scripts. Our job is to explain how gold IRAs work, compare the providers side by side and point out the trade-offs — including the downsides companies don't advertise — so you can decide what's right for you.
